Painters Working Right Across Cape Town

Paint is the one trade where the difference between a good job and a bad one only shows up two winters later. Cape Town is hard on exterior paint — the southeaster drives rain sideways into west-facing walls, the salt air on the Atlantic Seaboard eats at coatings, and the UV through summer bleaches anything that was applied too thin. We have been painting houses here long enough to know which walls fail first and why, and we quote for the preparation that stops it happening again rather than for the cheapest number on the page.

Around The House is a building company that paints, not a painting crew that also does odd jobs. That matters when the plaster underneath is cracked or there is damp coming through a wall — we can fix the cause before we coat over it, which a painting-only outfit usually cannot.

What We Paint

Exterior house painting

Full exterior repaints including crack repair, plaster patching, fungicidal wash, a bonding primer where the old coating is chalky, and two full coats of exterior acrylic. On older Cape Town homes we almost always find hairline cracking in the plaster that needs opening up and filling properly — skipping that step is the single most common reason a repaint fails inside three years.

Interior painting

Walls, ceilings, cornices, skirtings, doors and window frames. We move and cover furniture, mask edges rather than cutting in freehand, and keep ventilation going so the place is liveable while we work. Most three-bedroom interiors take a week.

Roof painting

Tile, IBR and corrugated roofs. Roofs get high-pressure cleaned, loose or broken tiles replaced, then primed and coated with a proper roof paint — not wall paint, which is the shortcut that leaves a roof looking patchy after one rainy season. We do roof coating work regularly and it pairs naturally with our waterproofing work when there is a leak to trace at the same time.

Damp and problem walls

If paint is bubbling, flaking in sheets or there is a tide mark creeping up an internal wall, painting over it is money wasted. We diagnose whether it is rising damp, penetrating damp through a wall or a failed roof detail, fix that first, and then paint. Our guide on rising damp — causes, signs and how it is fixed explains what to look for.

Commercial and body corporate work

Blocks of flats, complexes, offices and shopfronts. We work to a programme, give trustees and managing agents a written schedule, and can phase the job section by section so parking and access stay usable.

What House Painting Costs in Cape Town

As a working guide for 2026, a straightforward interior repaint of a three-bedroom home sits in the region of R18,000 to R35,000 depending on ceiling heights and how much enamel work there is on doors and frames. A full exterior repaint of a similar house typically runs R30,000 to R60,000, and a roof coating R20,000 to R45,000 depending on pitch, access and the roof material. Two-storey work and difficult access push it up because of scaffolding.

The honest part: preparation is what moves the price, not the paint. A wall that needs crack repair, re-plastering and a bonding primer costs more than a sound wall that just needs a wash and two coats. Any quote that does not say what preparation is included is not comparable to one that does — our guide on comparing quotes goes through what to look for.

When to Paint in Cape Town

October through April is the good window for exterior work — dry, warm enough for the paint to cure properly, and long daylight. Winter exterior painting is possible between fronts, but we will not coat a wall that has not dried out, because paint applied onto damp plaster will lift. Interiors we do all year. There is more detail in our guide on the best time to paint a house in Cape Town.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an exterior repaint take?

A single-storey three-bedroom house is usually five to eight working days, including preparation. Add two or three days if there is significant crack repair or plaster work, and longer on double-storey where scaffolding has to be moved.

Do you repair cracks and plaster, or only paint?

We repair. We are a building company, so crack repair, re-plastering, replacing rotten timber and fixing damp are all in-house. That is the main reason people call us rather than a painting-only crew.

What paint do you use?

Mainstream South African brands — Plascon, Dulux and Prominent Paints, depending on the surface and the budget. We will tell you where it is worth paying for the premium exterior product and where it genuinely is not.

Do you guarantee the work?

Yes. Workmanship is guaranteed and the paint carries the manufacturer’s warranty, which only stands if the system is applied as specified — primer included. That is part of why we quote preparation properly instead of leaving it out to win the job.

Which areas do you cover?

The Southern Suburbs, Southern Peninsula, Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl, northern suburbs and out to Somerset West and the Helderberg. Our areas we serve page lists the suburbs.
