Most paving that fails in Cape Town does not fail because of the bricks. It fails because of what is — or is not — underneath them, and because nobody worked out where the water was going to go. A driveway laid straight onto soft ground will rut under a car within a season. A patio laid dead flat will hold a puddle every time it rains. We build the base and the drainage first and lay the paving second, which is why our quotes are rarely the cheapest and why we are not back fixing the same driveway two years later.
Around The House is a building company, so excavation, sub-base, kerbing, concrete edging and drainage are all our own work rather than subcontracted out. On most jobs that is the difference between paving that sits flat for a decade and paving that starts to move.
Interlocking pavers, cobbles and bevelled blocks on a compacted sub-base with a concrete edge restraint, which is the part that stops the outer rows creeping outward under the weight of a car. We set the levels to fall away from the house, never towards it, and tie into the existing stormwater where there is one.
Laid with a deliberate fall so water runs off instead of standing, and finished to line up with the house rather than cutting awkward slivers at the edges. If the area is going to carry a built-in braai or a roof later, we thicken the base for it at the start rather than having to break it up afterwards.
Side passages, walkways, stepping-stone paths and bin areas. Narrow paths look like the easy part of the job and are usually where edging gets skipped, so the path slowly spreads and the sand washes out. We edge them properly.
Non-slip finishes around pools, laid with the fall running away from the water so dirt and rainwater do not wash back into the pool. We can also handle coping and the junction between paving and pool shell.
Sunken patches, rutted tracks where the wheels run, paving lifted by tree roots, or an area that has to come up so a pipe or a cable can go in. We lift, correct the base and relay using the existing pavers where they are still sound, which is a good deal cheaper than a full replacement.
It is the question we get asked most. Short version: concrete is usually a little cheaper to lay and gives a seamless surface, but when it cracks or you need to get at a pipe underneath it, you are breaking and patching — and the patch always shows. Paving costs a bit more up front, but individual blocks can be lifted and put back invisibly, and it handles ground movement better. As a 2026 working range, standard interlocking paving installed on a prepared base runs roughly R280 to R450 per square metre, cobbles and premium finishes R450 to R700, and relaying existing pavers R150 to R250 where the blocks are reusable. A typical double driveway of 40 to 60 square metres therefore lands somewhere between R14,000 and R30,000 for standard paving.
What pushes it up: excavation depth if the ground is soft, removing an old concrete slab, a retaining or step detail, poor access for a bakkie and barrow, and new stormwater. What a cheap quote usually leaves out is the sub-base depth and the concrete edging — ask for both to be stated in writing before you compare numbers.
A typical double driveway is three to five working days: a day to strip and excavate, a day to build and compact the base, then laying, cutting and edging. Allow longer if an old slab has to come out or there is drainage to install.
Sometimes, if the slab is sound, drains correctly and the extra height does not foul a garage door or a doorstep. Often it is better to break it out — we will tell you which after looking at it rather than guessing from a photo.
Some always will. Joints filled with the correct kiln-dried sand and compacted properly keep it to a minimum, and a polymeric jointing sand reduces it further. No installer who promises zero weeds is being straight with you.
Yes, and on most Cape Town jobs it is the part that matters most. Channel drains, soakaways and tying into existing stormwater are all work we do — getting the water off the paving and away from the house is the whole point of setting the levels first.
